Last day in class we were dealing with the differences between Past Simple and Present Perfect. Everything seemed crystal clear and I thought it was going to be a revision topic easy to go though. However, everything changed when we started seeing some examples in which both tenses were possible (with a change in meaning) regardless of the temporal expression we were using. We got into the issue of the nuances of language, and that it is not so easy. It really annoys the students when they think they have learnt the ropes of a rule, and then something utterly contradictory shows up.
As a teacher it is difficult to convey something that to you comes naturally because it has been previously internalised. I tried to make clear again the differences between time and tense, and at the same time draw the pictures of the time line I've been doing all my life.
In the end I think most of them understood the differences, but they need to spend too much time trying to analyse every case before the utter a response.
We might need to go back and forth on this issue here!
